LEVELLERS
Levellers are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. The band started their career in 1988 and have gained a reputation as one
of Britain's best live acts by their un-relenting commitment to touring and performing at festivals. They were recently honoured with the
award for "Festival Feel-Good Act" at the 2007 UK Festival Awards, voted for by the public.
They have ridden waves of huge popularity and chasms of widespread mistrust. They have ignored fads, fashions and trends, and in doing so have existed alongside them. The original line-up still play with a passion and pride that, having seen off many of their early contemporaries, is setting a standard that many young pretenders find hard to match.
SETH LAKEMAN
Music has always been part of Seth's life; his parents were part of a touring band which included Seth and his older brothers who played
from an early age and subsequently toured as The Lakeman Brothers. He grew up rubbing shoulders with British folk legends like Martin
Carthy and recent Mojo Award winner Bert Jansch. But at the same time he was playing air guitar on his bedroom to AC/DC's
'Back in Black'. Twenty years on you can hear both influences.
The three brothers went on to become part of the highly feted but short lived 'Equation'. Eventually, having toured the world, Seth struck out on his own, setting up his own label from a room in his cottage on Dartmoor. "Kitty Jay" was put together for a total of £300 and audaciously launched in a gig at Dartmoor Prison. It was short-listed for a Mercury Music Prize and the career took off.
3 DAFT MONKEYS
Cornish Trio 3 Daft Monkeys combine rousing vocals, frenetic fiddling, rhythmical 12-string guitar, dancing bass and foot drum. Far too
diverse to be pigeon-holed they create a stunning blend of upbeat, danceable music which somehow, despite all its world influences,
remains undeniably British.
